Master Lai Hung, also known as “Daredevil Hung” or “Crazy Hung,” was a larger-than-life figure in the world of Chinese martial arts. A powerful and charismatic fighter, he embodied the fearless, confrontational spirit of Buk Sing Choy Lay Fut — a style built not just for forms, but for real combat. His flamboyant personality and willingness to test his skills against anyone earned him both notoriety and deep respect across Hong Kong. He trained in the unforgiving rooftop culture of 1960s martial arts, where challenge matches were frequent and reputations were made or broken in minutes.
Lai Hung cemented his status through his unmatched record in full-contact fighting, particularly in a now-legendary competition where he defeated four top Muay Thai fighters in succession. This was no small feat — Muay Thai was (and remains) one of the world’s most formidable striking arts. For a Chinese kung fu practitioner to not only survive but dominate in that arena was an extraordinary achievement. It elevated his status not only within the Buk Sing community but across the entire Chinese martial arts world. His success brought pride to the Choy Lay Fut lineage and proved its effectiveness in a modern combat setting.
He was also one of the Five Black Panthers of Choy Lay Fut, a renowned group of elite fighters who made a lasting impact on the Hong Kong martial scene. Known for their dynamic sparring, street-tested skills, and uncompromising dedication, the Five Black Panthers were feared and admired in equal measure. They became symbols of a new generation of martial artists — more mobile, more aggressive, and more willing to cross traditional boundaries in pursuit of truth in combat.
Although Lai Hung’s time as an instructor to Vince and Dave Lacey was brief, his influence was pivotal. Recognising their potential and commitment, he introduced them to Master Kong Hing, setting in motion a chain of events that would lead to the spread of authentic Buk Sing Choy Lay Fut across Australia and later, the United States. While his path was chaotic and at times unpredictable — true to his nickname — his impact on the lineage is undeniable. Lai Hung’s fierce legacy lives on through the fighting spirit he passed down to his students and through the style he helped forge on rooftop schools, tournament floors, and in the hearts of warriors who still train today.
