Master Wong Seng Choong began his martial journey in Poon Yew, Canton Province, where he trained under the guidance of his father from a very young age. Early exposure to the martial arts instilled in him a strong foundation of discipline, flow, and control. As he matured, he became a direct student of Master Kong On, and later, trained extensively under Grandmaster Kong Hing. This dual mentorship shaped him into a refined practitioner of both Choy Lay Fut Buk Sing and Chen-style Tai Chi, giving him a rare ability to bridge the dynamic external techniques of southern kung fu with the deep internal energy systems of classical Tai Chi.
Between 1962 and 2015, Master Wong trained with unwavering dedication. His quiet intensity and technical brilliance earned him a formidable reputation in both martial arts circles and competition arenas. From 1972 to 1974, he competed in numerous tournaments across Asia, where his powerful yet controlled execution of forms — paired with his humility and grace — won him not only trophies, but deep respect. While many fighters sought fame, Master Wong remained devoted to the practice itself, using competition as a test of skill rather than a stage for ego.
As a teacher, Master Wong is known for his extraordinary ability to transmit internal energy and structural understanding. His Chen-style Tai Chi — particularly in forms like Cannon Fist (Pao Chui) and Pushing Hands — is characterised by its flowing transitions, internal explosiveness, and effortless control. Students who have paired with him in partner drills speak of being lifted, redirected, or suddenly unbalanced without even seeing the movement coming. His rare mix of warmth and precision makes him not only a formidable martial artist, but an enlightening and joyful instructor — always teaching with a smile, and always rooted in deep presence.
In 2017, Master Wong visited our Balcatta Academy, joining Master Chia Yan Soon to conduct a workshop that left a lasting impression on all who attended. His teachings were clear, his demonstrations powerful, and his presence infused the school with the living spirit of traditional martial arts. Master Wong Seng Choong represents the ideal martial artist — playful yet powerful, humble yet deeply accomplished, and a shining example of what it means to carry tradition forward with grace, integrity, and unwavering spirit.
